Career Center Connector (C3) is a free service for all UM Ann Arbor degree-seeking students and new graduates. It’s your way to join our community and stay up-to-date with the variety of opportunities that our office can help connect you to! Here are a couple ways to use C3 to your advantage:
Getting Started
We create accounts for all first-year students during their first semester on campus, so you have an account even if you’ve never logged in. Simply head to https://umich-csm.symplicity.com/students, and use the ‘forgot password’ button to receive your login info.
Once you’re in, the first thing we ask you to do is fill out some profile information. You’ll want to include academic info like your class, major, etc., but don’t forget to add in things like career interests, future educational plans, and language proficiency. We organize lots of career related events throughout the year, and are often asked to promote events for employers and graduate/professional schools. We search the system for students whose interests might match up with each opportunity, and send them out via email. By adding in some information about your skills and interests, you can be sure that you’ll receive messages from us that are pertinent to you!
Jobs, Internships, and Search Agents
One of the most common uses of C3 is to reach out to employers who are interested in connecting directly with University of Michigan students. Many of them post jobs and internships, some of which include on-campus interviews right here in our office. And while some positions are more ‘corporate’ in nature, there are also many postings from non-profit organizations and government entities as well. In fact, we plan to highlight a few interesting postings every Monday, in our staff picks right here on the blog. Here’s a couple helpful tips when searching for jobs and internships:
Advanced Search
Use the advanced search, and focus on things like graduation date and job function in order to narrow down the results. Many employers are more interested in your background/interests/skills than in the specifics of what you study, so you might limit your options if you search for positions by majors/concentrations.
Search Agents
At the top of the advanced search, try clicking the ‘save as’ box, to save your search. Once you’ve done so, you can head to the ‘Search Agents’ section and click on ‘Schedule’ in order to schedule that search to run on an interval. Depending on your settings, you can choose to have an email sent to you once per week, once per month, etc. with all the new postings that match your search criteria. This way you can stay up-to-date on new and interesting postings without having to log-in so often.
Those are just a few ways to take advantage of Career Center Connector, but be sure to check out some of the other features, including the Resume Builder, and the ability to view upcoming employer events and information sessions!
